Mission Bay
If you want a bit of protected water to hang out in for the day, Mission Bay is the way to go. The harbor is a great destination both for boaters and for people who want to stay a bit longer on land. You can spend the whole day lounging on your boat while the rest of the family putters around on land. On a warm day, it’s nearly impossible to have a bad day at Mission Bay.
Lake Murray
It’s no surprise that Lake Murray is one of the area’s top boating destinations. This freshwater reservoir is close to the city center, situated in some lovely natural scenery, and has some of the most diverse birdwatching in the area. Of course, boaters and fishermen will patrol the waters constantly, but there will be plenty of space for you to get a relaxing day in, too.
Catalina Island
Looking to get out on the open sea? Catalina Island is a lovely day trip for any boater. While sailing out to the island, you’ll see lovely scenery and possibly sea life like dolphins and whales. And its distance from the mainland is just enough that it really feels like an escape. Any of the Channel Islands are great, but Catalina is the one with enough infrastructure for boaters to feel secure.
